Importance of Sleep ~ Even During Peak Yang
& Image Medicine Healing for Insomnia from my Qigong Grandmaster, Mingtang Xu
Even in a time of so much light and yang Qi, rest and sleep are important. Yes, the Huang Di Nei Jing (the Yellow Emperor’s book of internal Medicine) notes that in summer it is best to go to bed late (meaning 11 p.m.) and get up early. So it is natural to have less sleep. I certainly see with my son, Orion!! He doesn’t want to nap mid-day when the sun is shining so bright!! And having some “resting time” mid day in the peak of Yang Qi is also an important time to nourish the seed of Yin that will again start rising just after the Summer Solstice.
With my son, we used to do “nap time” everyday right after lunch. But now with the brighter sun and warmer weather, he’s not so interested in snuggling and sleeping mid-day. Why he just wants to “play, play play!” J So recently we renamed this time as our resting, quiet time. Whether or not he naps is not as important as just having some time to rest – reading books, lying down, nursing some. In this way he (and we) are replenished for the rest of the day….and are again, nourishing our seeds of yin that will grow through the yang season of summer.
In some recent teachings and healings from my Qigong Grandmaster, Xu Mingtang, he’s focused on the importance of sleep and ways to heal insomnia. Chinese Medicine is over 3,000 years old. Two main schools of Chinese Medicine developed: that based on Huang Di Nei Jing – the Yellow Emperor’s Cannon of Internal Medicine and the school of Bian Que.
(This is a side note, but the Bian Que school was banned long ago because the founder, Bian Que, taught doctors to do “Image” healing and image diagnosis through the 3rd eye. It is/was so very effective, that the Chinese government banned this school of Chinese Medicine and burned all the books. The government then went to “standardize” Chinese Medicine based off the Yellow Emperor’s Cannon of Internal Medicine. My Qigong Grandmaster, Mingtang Xu has been the key person bringing this school of Chinese Medicine back. He’s been teaching Image Medicine for over two decades now, and in 2013, some old Bian Que texts were discovered near Chengdu! :-))
In both the Yellow Emperor’s Cannon of Internal Medicine, and in the new found text for Bian Que’s school, the first chapter talks of the importance of good sleep for a foundation of good, strong health and longevity.
